The Friends of Scouting dinner is the signature event of the Heart of Virginia Council's Friends of Scouting annual giving campaign. Friends of Scouting is Scouting's largest and most important source of funding.
The strength of the campaign, and in Scouting in general, lies with individuals who give their time, talent and resources to keep this great movement going. Scouting truly is a movement of individuals and organizations who believe in how we develop character, citizenship and leadership skills in youth.

Scoutreach, our smallest district, is over goal at 101.1% and Cardinal, our largest district, is at 94% of goal. Arrohattoc, Huguenot Trail, Rivers, Council Division and Capitol are at 82%, 77%, 74%, 72% and 71% respectively.
Help Scouting maintain the many critical services, including summer camp, day camps, camperships, the Scout Shop and the Join Scouting Campaigns. Our young people need Scouting more than ever and we need you more than ever.

As of June 19th, we have raised $1,180,722 or 75%, compared to $1,340,029 or 95% same time last year.
A number of volunteers have joined this new team to raise the last $395,000 to achieve the goal.
You may have been asked to volunteer in this campaign already, or you might be asked to volunteer or to give this year, if you gave last year and not already been asked to give this year. Please say yes to both. We need our Friends of Scouting more than ever this year.
Stay tuned for more updates and thanks for all you do for Scouting!

What a great night for Scouting! Jim Lovell did a great job connecting his career with his time in the Boy Scouts as a youth. It seemed that everyone left the event feeling really good about Scouting.
At the conclusion of the dinner $848,826 had been raised for Friends of Scouting. That includes all gifts up to that point in the campaign. It is difficult to separate who gave before the dinner because of the event or gave through an unrelated solicitation. So we count it all.
At the same point last year we had raised $843,845. The good news is that we were up $5,000 (in a down economy) and our attendance was the best yet with over 900. We set chairs for 1071 up from 1018 or so last year. Believe it or not, we traditionally have a 10% no-show rate, people who rsvp that they will be there but do not make it for whatever reason. If those no-shows do not make a gift it hurts us to the tune of $80. The cost of the meal, reception, facilities, speaker, av, etc. adds up to $80 a person. That also means that if someone only gives $100 then we’ve entertained them for $80 and only kept $20. Not much of a fundraiser in that case.
With an overall campaign goal of $1,575,000 we have passed the 50% mark and still need to raise $726,174. Unit presentations are showing good results but we still need to reach out and ask everyone in our donor base and invite others to become a Friend of Scouting. We could use your help in taking cards on or identifying 5-8 prospects to work in the next few weeks. We’ll let you know when we are ready to start that phase.
If you served as one of our 120 table hosts we appreciate it very much. You are the reason this event is successful. Please think about your dinner guests and whom should be asked to be a table host next year.
We want to again recognize our lead corporate sponsor Scott & Stringfellow/BB&T and Walter Robertson and Buford Scott for their leadership, support and strong endorsements of Scouting on stage. Dinner Chairman John McCulla devoted untold hours to chairing the dinner committee and we thank him for his work also.
There will be a debriefing of the event on March 16th. If you have any comments to share please forward them on to Charley Tinsley at
