William D. Boyce Unit Organizer Award:  Victor Thomas Jenkins, for developing Venture Crew 6465 and Cub Scout Pack 6252, both chartered to Salem United Methodist Church.

District Award of Merit:

Two worthy recipients received this prestigious award.  For both, the award represented years of dedicated service beyond self towards the greater Scouting program, with far too many reasons to be listed here.  Sandra Warren of Cub Scout Pack 6535, and Unit Commissioner Edward Hinds were surprised by District Chairman Spencer Adams when called to the podium to accept their awards; but were happy to accept in front of their smiling families.  Award of Merit recipients are nominated by a peer group of those who have already earned an Award of Merit.

Haley's Automall was recognized for their continued support for our District Pinewood Derby Championship.

Hosea Jones was present to accept on behalf of Tom Smith and the Monacan Chapter 60 Order of the Arrow for their organization of the Fishing Derby and Klondike Derby.  Congratulations also to Tom Smith, Monacan Chapter #60 Advisors, for receiving the Order of the Arrow Founder's Award from Nawakwa Lodge #3.

Alpha Phi Omega, the "Scouting Fraternity", from Longwood University was recognized and appreciated for the Merit Badge Day they sponsored in 2006( 2007s event comes up this April 21st!).  Grace Marbella, now a graduate of Longwood, was instrumental in organizing the event.  This year, Kristina Miller has taken the initiative to ensure that local Boy Scouts have the opportunity to earn as many as three Merit Badges in a single day!

Additionally, the district was proud to recognize cancer-survivor Phil Scarborough, our District Advancement Chairman.  We are proud that he has persevered through his sickness and treatment, and that he has chosen to remain part of our Scouting family.  Phil has always been a Scouter to emulate, but never more so than now.

Bill Jenkins was also the recipient of a unique honor, one not likely to be repeated for some time.  For his outstanding efforts in ensuring that our Trails End popcorn shipments were transferred to units smoothly and efficiently, Bill was awarded the Popcorn Kernel's Cover, an artist piece of headgear that anyone would recognize and render the proper salute!  Thanks, Bill!

Thanks also to Dennis Jones of Troop 6596, who opened and closed the facilities for us, and of course, a warm thank you to St. Theresa's for hosting our program.  We hope to see you all again in 2008!
