The first line on all Local Tour Permits states that all permits must be filed in the Scout Service Center two weeks in advance of trip. We are being inundated with permit requests 1-3 days before trips. Therefore, if a tour permit is not in the office within 7 days of your trip the permit will be stamped, dated and filed, but WILL NOT be sent back to you. As long as your permit is in the office you are covered. The guide to safe scouting states: Tour Permits - If a unit plans a trip within 500 miles of the home base, it is important that the unit obtain a local tour permit. A national tour permit is required for trips in excess of 500 miles from home or outside the continental United States. Most short, in-town den trips of a few hours do not require a tour permit; however, it is recommended that dens obtain permission slips from parents. The reason for filling out a tour permit is so that you have proof that a unit activity has been well planned and organized and is under capable and qualified leadership. When in doubt, fill it out.
